Hi everyone,
Boca Inc is back with another post! :) Today, we're going to touch on the topic, cancer myths.
Myth #1 : Only women get breast cancer.
This is by far one of the biggest cancer myths of all time. Although male breast cancer is uncommon, they still DO get breast cancer. According to www.cancer.com , an estimated 1500 men will be diagnosed and about 500 will die from the disease this year.
Myth #2 : Cancer is contagious.
This is not true. No cancer is capable of spreading from one person to another through contact.
Myth #3 : People with cancer must remain in a hospital bed.
According to www.cancer.net , most people who live with cancer are treated on an outpatient basis, which basically means periodic appointments, and not an overnight stay in a hospital. The cancer patiens can stay in their home community and can continue with either some or all of their daily activites. For example, many people can work part-time or full-time, care for children, and attend social activities, despite undergoing cancer treatment.
Myth #4 : Positive thinking will cure cancer.
While maintaing a positive outlook during cancer treatment is essential, it will not cure cancer. Being optimistic helps with quality of life during treatment. There is no scientific evidence that a positive attitude will cure cancer, according to www.cancer.about.com Myth #5 : Wearing antiperspirants and deodorant can cause cancer.
There is no conclusive evidence from recent studies that wearing them can cause breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Society and www.cancer.about.com . This cancer myth, is by far one of the most popular among women.
Myth #6 : Cancer causes hairloss.
Cancer does not cause hairloss! According to www.cancer.about.com once again, hairloss is a side effect of treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Not all people who undergo such treatment lose their hair too.
Myth #7 : I am too young to worry about breast cancer.
While its true that the breast cancer risk increases as you get older, the fact is that women of all ages are at risk for developing cancer. (http://womenshealth.about.com/od/breastcancer/a/breastcafacts.htm)
Myth #8 : Sugar causes cancer to grow faster.
Although all cells, including cancer cells, use glucose (blood sugar) for energy, sugar does not speed tumor growth. In turn, removing sugar from your diet will not slow tumor growth.(http://www.cancer.net/patient/All+About+Cancer/Cancer.Net+Feature+Articles/Cancer+Basics/Cancer+Myths)
